Seller's Notes

A Concours-winning example of Rolls-Royce’s pioneering luxury car, which was rebuilt in the 1990s. Power comes from a 7.4-litre side-valve straight-six, paired with a four-speed manual transmission. Originally named the ‘40/50 hp’, the Silver Ghost title was popularised by the press, and the model was officially renamed when the Phantom range was launched in 1925. A total of 7,874 Silver Ghosts were produced from 1907 to 1926, including 1,701 from the American Springfield factory. Chassis ‘58TM’ was originally designated as a nickel-finish chassis with D-rake steering. It commenced pre-delivery tests in June 1924, which were completed in July. On 8 August 1924, Dalgety & Co Ltd of Melbourne accepted a £50 deposit on behalf of a respected local client, a former bookmaker turned thoroughbred stud owner, Solomon Green. This was the third new Silver Ghost ordered by Green, following delivery of his 1912 chassis ‘1853E’ and 1921 chassis ‘142LG’, as well as his second brass-finished example. It was purchased as an unrestored chassis in 1990, and rebuilt by Roger Fry in Western Australia over the next eight years. The brightwork was gold-plated in 1998. Once restored, it won Class 1 in the 1999 Federal Rally Concours d’Elegance in Canberra. The odometer shows 8,676 miles, though the true mileage is not known. The Silver Ghost’s side-valve straight-six features a seven-bearing crankshaft with full pressure lubrication and an especially large centre main bearing, which helps to remove vibration, essentially splitting the engine into two three-cylinder units. Two spark plugs were fitted to each cylinder, with a choice of magneto or coil ignition available from 1921. Electric lighting was added to the standard equipment list in 1919, as opposed to acetylene or oil-powered lamps. The chassis had rigid front and rear axles, and leaf springs all round. This example has a replica Barker’s ‘torpedo’ tourer body, finished in silver with gold-plated brightwork, black wheel arches, and a black soft-top roof, over a black leather interior with gold-toned trim and elegant wood inlays. It rides on a set of body-coloured wheels with gold centres, wrapped with Lester 7.00-21 tyres. A spare wheel is mounted on each front wing. Equipment includes door-mounted storage pockets, a rear drinks cabinet, folding rear tables, a black rear luggage case containing three briefcases, and a modern stereo and CD changer. Accompanying the vehicle will be its owner’s handbook, service record, restoration notes, and some technical documentation. Please refer to the photo gallery to assess the exterior and interior condition. This is an attractive example of Rolls-Royce’s pioneering luxury car, which was extensively rebuilt in the 1990s, later winning Class 1 in the 1999 Federal Rally Concours d’Elegance in Canberra. Reportedly maintained by experienced technicians, it would now make a wonderful addition to any collection of classics.
