Seller's Notes

A distinguished example of Rolls-Royce’s celebrated pre-war luxury tourer, this Phantom I features elegant coachwork by Windovers and numerous bespoke appointments. It is powered by a 7.7-litre naturally aspirated inline-six engine, driving the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission, with an added hydraulic overdrive system. Originally delivered to New South Wales in November 1928, it is believed to have had only three or four prior owners, including Australian entrepreneur J.A. Buckland and long-term custodian Malcolm Johns from the 1970s onward. According to Praeclarum (RROC of Australia magazine), chassis 96AL known as ‘Isobel’ won the 1982 concours d’elegance event. It has now been with the seller for three years. The odometer indicates 9,999 miles, though this is not warranted. Build year: 1928 This Phantom I is fitted with stately Windovers bodywork finished in a handsome two-tone burgundy and black colour scheme with matching vinyl covering the roof and main body panels, over a black leather and grey cloth-trimmed interior, featuring a wooden dashboard, door cappings, and window surrounds, ivory-coloured handles, and chrome trim highlights. It rides on a set of spoked wheels with optional metal discs, and fitted with Dunlop tyres. Equipment includes a driver’s side A-pillar-mounted spotlight, a rear-mounted storage trunk, side-mounted spare wheels, a four-spoke steering wheel, a glass cabin partition with curtains, a front cabin roof ventilation hatch, reversed-hinged doors, a microphone system for rear-seat communication with the driver, rear cabin crystal vases, a pair of folding rear cabin seats, rear cabin storage pockets and drawers, a rear cabin analogue clock, and a rear window blind. The car has been upgraded with a hydraulic overdrive system for improved touring usability. Accompanying the car are copies of the original Rolls-Royce build and delivery documents, showing the car's shipment to Australia in late 1928, as well as various NSW log books, and two Certificates of Approved Operations. One ignition key is included with the car. Please refer to the photo gallery to assess the exterior and interior condition. Specific notes from the seller include: the car is reported to have been restored by a previous owner and subsequently won a concours award in 1985. The most recent roadworthiness test was on 10 September 2025, which is understood to have resulted in a clean pass. In January 2024, Repair & Restoration Services road tested the car and identified a misfire, so subsequently removed all the spark plugs for blasting and cleaning, adjusted the gapping, and removed the rocker cover to adjust all tappets. The wiring in the original coil was also repaired, the coil refitted, and the car was tested and found to be in good order. In July 2023, Repair & Restoration Services carried out a steering wheel position adjustment, in order to raise the column back to the original position, and also made up a new alloy plate to be fitted to the firewall. A new battery was installed in November 2022. This Rolls-Royce Phantom I is a majestic and smartly specified example of one of the marque’s most iconic pre-war models, with sedan coachwork by Windovers. Australian-delivered and believed to have had only a handful of owners from new; it is also reported to have received a historic restoration with subsequent concours win during the 1980s. It is handsomely presented with opulent interior details and could be an ideal centrepiece for any pre-war collection, or a charming entrant for vintage car tours and events.
