Seller's Notes

This W111-generation Mercedes-Benz 220SE is a vibrant and well-preserved example of the stylish classic pillarless coupe, offered from long-term ownership and in smart, largely original condition. Under the bonnet sits a naturally aspirated 2.2-litre inline-six, producing around 88kW and driving the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission. The odometer shows 90,949 miles, however this is not warranted. This 220SE Coupe is now located in New South Wales, and has been with the seller and second owner for seven years. This 220SE is finished in the bold shade of Light Red over a retrimmed grey ‘MB-Tex’ vinyl-trimmed interior, featuring handsome wood trim and polished metal inlays. It rides on a set of 13-inch steel wheels with chrome and body-coloured hubcaps, with whitewall-style ‘Atlas’ trims on all four wheels. The factory specification includes twin front spotlights, a two-bar steering wheel, a VDO analogue clock, heater and ventilation controls, a Becker radio, and manually operated windows. The car will be supplied with a data card, the original keys, the original leather seats which are cracked, and some maintenance invoices. This is a matching numbers car with original engine number 127984-20-005826, as per the original build data card. It also comes with original keys from delivery matching the data card. The Light Red paintwork is described by the seller as being in good overall condition given the car’s age, though they note a minor upwards dent and crack in the paint on the bonnet from where a tool was left under the bonnet. There is also some deterioration on the rear windscreen rubber, and slight pitting on the driver’s-side door mirror cover, the passenger door handle, and the nearside front quarter light window trim. Inside, the retrimmed cabin is presented in good shape. There is cracking on the steering wheel, gear knob, and wood dashboard trim, a ‘patina’ on the dashboard controls, mild discolouration on the driver’s seat and door card armrest, some discolouration on the headlining, deterioration on the door rubbers, and a few other blemishes and scuffs around the trim. The seller is not aware of any mechanical faults, though they do note that while the original speaker is working, it is very quiet and will need replacing. This 220SE Coupe’s most recent maintenance was carried out in September 2022. This consisted of the clutch slave cylinder being rebuilt, the fuel sender and filter being replaced, and new steering coupling bushes being fitted. Prior to this, technicians at Silver Star Service in Kingsgrove carried out major maintenance in February 2018, which consisted of a new clutch kit, differential and gearbox mounts and tailshaft coupling being replaced, new pinion seals and differential seals. The radiator was reconditioned, new hoses and thermostat fitted and an electronic ignition system being installed. Fiddly items that were also replaced included the speedo cable and bonnet release cable. Other notable maintenance includes the middle-to-rear exhaust system being replaced with a stainless-steel unit. This W111-era Mercedes-Benz 220SE is a bold and well-maintained example of the marque’s elegant classic pillarless coupe, offered from long-term ownership and in smart, largely original condition. Presented in an appealing Light Red finish, with a handsome retrimmed cabin and timeless styling, it would make a fine addition to any assembly of classics, and a stylish companion for weekend jaunts, car show visits, and longer-distance touring alike. A current NSW roadworthy will be supplied at time of sale to allow for NSW club registration of full registration in NSW.
