This Citroën DS21 Décapotable by Chapron is a stylish and exceptionally rare open-top French classic, which benefits from previous restorative maintenance. Under the bonnet sits a naturally aspirated 2,175cc inline-four, which sends its power to the front wheels via a four-speed semi-automatic transmission. This example is understood to have been manufactured in 1966, though was a UK-delivered model first registered in 1967. It was imported to Australia in 2019, where it has been with the seller ever since. This DS21 Décapotable is one of just 389 cars built by Henri Chapron, and one of as few as eight right-hand drive examples. Its authenticity as a genuine Chapron has been confirmed by his daughter, Noelle-Eleonore Chapron, who holds the relevant records. Documentation shows that in 1986, it was purchased by a Mr Richard Phillips of the advertising agency J Walter Thompson (London) with the odometer at 64,194 miles. It was cared for by a respected Citroën specialist in London between 1986 and 2002, and by another specialist in Somerset, UK, thereafter where approximately £10,000 was invested in refurbishment in 2004. It changed hands again in 2007 at 85,080 miles, and the current owner purchased it nearly five years ago. Since then, it has been the subject of further restoration as detailed below. The odometer shows 86,750 miles from new, which is the genuine total. This example is finished in an attractive shade of dark blue with a black convertible roof, over a tan leather-trimmed interior, featuring a contrasting dark blue dashboard. It rides on a set of 15-inch steel wheels with chrome hubcaps, shod in mixed tyres. Equipment includes twin front spotlights, a single-spoke steering wheel, a push-button Blaupunkt radio, a Jaeger analogue clock, heater and ventilation controls, and a driver’s armrest. The car comes with a spare wheel, two sets of keys, a folder with all the maintenance invoices from the seller’s ownership and some historical documents, ownership history from 1986, a D-Series parts catalogue, an Autopress Ltd workshop manual, and the owner’s guide. The interior was reconditioned in December 2023. Major restorative maintenance was carried out in 2021, which included the bumpers and headlight surrounds being re-chromed, the lower front apron and dash panels repainted, a new wiring harness, a new radiator, water pump, spherical accumulators, spark plugs and leads, battery, and cables, the petrol pump replaced, new regulator and hydraulic pump belts, replacement rear suspension boots, a new alternator and wiper motor, and the dashboard renewed. The engine and front end were removed and rebuilt in 2020.
