Seller's Notes

This R107-generation Mercedes-Benz 350 SL is an honest, early example of the refined classic roadster, offered in highly original condition, and benefitting from significant recent bodywork and mechanical maintenance. Under the bonnet sits a naturally aspirated 3.5-litre V8, delivering around 150kW to the rear wheels via a three-speed automatic transmission. This right-hand drive example has been with the seller for three years. The odometer shows 152,644 Kms from new. This 350 SL is understood to have originally been finished in Icon Gold, but is now presented in the striking shade of Signal Red with a matching hard-top and a black convertible roof, over a black MB-Tex leatherette-trimmed interior. It rides on a set of 14-inch ‘Baroque’ alloy wheels, shod in mixed tyres. The factory specification includes a green top-tinted windscreen, dual-zone heater and ventilation controls, and manually operated windows. This example now features a Toyota-branded cassette stereo. The car comes with tools, a first aid kit, a jack, a Haynes workshop manual, a Mercedes-Benz book, the missing pieces of the windscreen trim, and a small collection of maintenance invoices. Please refer to the photo gallery to assess the exterior and interior condition. Specific notes from the seller include: minor scuffing on the hard-top roof, a few very small chips, the alloy wheels could benefit from a refurb, a small stitching tear on the passenger seat, evidence of previous repair to the dashboard where it had cracked, the sun visors will require new covers, there are minor chrome trims that will need to be refitted on either side of the windscreen. The seller notes that the car will require some recommissioning work before returning to the road, the radio and speakers need reconnecting, and the air conditioning is not connected. This 350 SL’s most recent maintenance was carried out by Andrew Green Restorations, which consisted of the body being stripped back to bare metal, minor rust in the scuttle section, left-hand headlight cavity, and inner guards repaired, a new body panel section fabricated for the left-hand front jacking point, dust and debris cleared from concealed areas, all drainage holes in doors, firewall and petrol cap recess checked, preventative rust treatment applied including injecting rust treatment into the doors and concealed cavities, a full respray, and a new windscreen fitted. Major maintenance was performed in March 2020 by Peninsula Prestige Autos, which included the distributor being rebuilt with a new Bosch trigger point set, the steering links and damper replaced, the brakes stripped and cleaned, brake hoses replaced where needed, brake callipers replaced where needed, the fuel injectors replaced, the in-tank fuel filter replaced, and new fuel hoses fitted as needed. Prior to this, technicians at Peninsula Prestige Autos carried out an engine oil and filter change in March 2018, as well as replacing both tie rod ends, replacing the transmission fluid, fitted a new timing chain, sprocket gear, tensioner, and spark plugs, setting up and tuning the engine, and performing a wheel alignment. Other notable maintenance includes a new battery fitted in 2023, and a new thermostat and distributor points in May 2017. This R107-generation Mercedes-Benz 350 SL is an honest, early example of the elegant classic roadster, which benefits from significant recent bodywork and mechanical maintenance. Whilst reported to be in good overall condition, it could now benefit from some minor cosmetic and mechanical recommissioning maintenance in due course to bring it back to its best. With a vibrant colour scheme and timeless styling, it would make a solid addition to any collection, and an enjoyable companion for weekend jaunts, and fair-weather cruising.
