Seller's Notes

This Fiat Dino is a classic Italian 2+2 coupé, which has benefitted from a recent top-end engine overhaul. It is powered by a naturally aspirated quad-cam 2.4-litre V6 with three twin-choke downdraught Weber carburettors, delivering 132kW to the rear wheels through a dog-leg five-speed ZF manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. The Dino name refers to the Ferrari Dino V6, produced by Fiat and installed in the cars to achieve the production numbers sufficient for Ferrari to homologate the engine for Formula 2 racing. Sold new in the USA and imported to Australia in 2015, this car is reported to be one of 2,414 examples built. The odometer shows 40,468 km, though this is not warranted. The Fiat Dino 2400 premiered in October 1969 at the Turin Motor show with a larger 2.4-litre engine. The V6 now put out 132 kW, and used a cast iron engine block instead of the previous light alloy item. The same engine was installed on the Dino 246 GT, Ferrari's evolution of the 206. Rather than engine power and absolute speed, the most important consequence of the larger displacement was a marked increase in torque, available at lower engine speeds. The Dinoplex C electronic capacitive discharge ignition was developed by Magneti Marelli expressly for the high-revving Dino V6. Whereas the original Dino was equipped with a rigid axle suspended by leaf springs and four shock absorbers, 2.4-litre cars used coil-sprung independent rear suspension with two shock absorbers derived from the Fiat 130. The dual-circuit braking system is vacuum servo operated on four wheel disc brakes. The upgraded Girling brakes of the Dino 2400 were shared with sports cars like the De Tomaso Pantera and Lamborghini Miura. The Bertone bodywork of this particular car is finished in Silver Metallic. It rides on 14-inch six-hole wheels with black Fiat centre caps, shod with Continental Vanco 2 tyres. Inside, it has retrimmed red and black leather upholstery (having originally been specified with beige velour), as well as red carpets, a black centre console and dashboard top, wood trim inlays, a wood-trimmed three-spoke steering wheel, and ‘Bertone’ lettering on the passenger side of the dash. Equipment includes push-out front quarter light windows, Veglia Borletti dials, a heated rear window and a Blaupunkt AM/FM stereo. An Ansa Tech dual exhaust has been fitted. Accompanying the vehicle will be the original parts catalogue, jack and toolkit, a spare wheel, a collection of maintenance invoices, its import documentation, replacement engine and gearbox mounts, and a new tailshaft flex coupling. Please refer to the photo gallery to assess the exterior and interior condition. Specific notes from the seller include: the passenger-side electric window is ‘jerky’; the wiper motors have been renewed but one of the connectors needs to be reconnected or replaced; the shock absorber rubbers, fan belt tensioner, tailshaft flex joint, and engine mounts should be replaced. In 2022, the engine underwent a top-end overhaul, including fitment of new crank seals and gaskets. The bottom-end engine and gearbox seals were also replaced, with parts sourced from Superformance. The engine oil and filter have been changed during the seller’s two-year custody. This Fiat Dino is a desirable Italian 2+2 coupé, finished in a stylish colour scheme. Sold new in the USA and imported to Australia in 2015, this car is reported to be one of 2,414 examples built, and having benefited from a recent top-end engine overhaul, it would now make a fine addition to any collection of classics.
