This Citroën SM is a tastefully specified example of the stylish Maserati-engined classic grand tourer, benefitting from significant previous restorative maintenance. It is powered by a naturally aspirated 2.7-litre Maserati V6 fed by triple Weber carburettors, delivering around 127kW to the front wheels via a three-speed automatic transmission. This example was originally delivered to the US, and imported to Australia in June 2000 before receiving a complete mechanical overhaul and restorative maintenance by specialist Peter McLeod’s company, SM Australia, and has now been with the seller for three years. The seller reports that it has continuous history from new. This SM is believed to have been the first example delivered to the US, where it was used to demonstrate the car to Citroën dealers in the country. The odometer shows 94,072 miles, though this is not warranted. All examples of the Citroën SM were produced in left-hand drive, and this example is identifiable as a US-market model due to its four fixed headlamps, as the SM’s original swivelling light arrangement was not legal in the US at the time. This SM is finished in the sophisticated period shade of Mother of Pearl Grey (Gris Nacre) over the original interior with Tobacco (Tabac) leather, brown carpets, complementary black dashboard and transmission tunnel, and brushed gold-effect trim. It rides on its original 15-inch steel wheels with polished chrome hubcaps, shod with new front tyres. The factory specification includes electric front windows, air-conditioning, heater and ventilation controls, Jaeger gauges, the original vertically mounted radio, and a heated rear screen. The car comes with its wheel brace, spare wheel, the tool kit, an original Citroën price list, the owner’s repair manual, the owner’s handbook, US certificate of title, and extensive files of maintenance history. Please note: the numberplate ‘255448 J’ is not included in the sale. Please refer to the photo gallery to assess the exterior and interior condition. Specific notes from the seller include: a small imperfection on the driver’s door. The interior is in completely original condition. The seller is not aware of any mechanical or electrical faults, though they do note that the passenger window is slow but still works correctly. The most recent REGO test was on 28 August 2023, which resulted in a clean pass with no advisories. The most recent maintenance was in June 2023 at 93,890 miles by The Best Car Company in Artarmon, which consisted of a full service, as well as a completely new wiring loom being fitted. Essential maintenance was carried out by Best Classic Cars of Artarmon in September 2021, which included new iridium spark plugs, the fuel tank drained, a new fuel filter, the distributor stripped, the cassette-type contact set removed, cleaned and refitted, the carburettor choke cable adjusted, a new offside front bumper locating bolt, a new battery isolator switch, both earth wires repaired, the carburettors stripped, cleaned, and rebuilt with an overhaul kit, all new fuel hoses, a new ignition contact set, new distributor cap, ballast resistors, HT leads and rotor arm, two new ignition coils fitted, all ignition wiring connectors replaced, new engine oil and filter, exterior brightwork detailing, and the upholstery cleaned and fed. Technicians at European Autocare carried out major maintenance in July 2021, which included a new heavy-duty battery fitted, a check and any necessary remedial work carried out on all electrical wiring and bulbs, new windscreen wipers, the washer pump housing repaired, the jet grommets replaced, the front and rear suspension spheres regassed, the main accumulator sphere regassed, the left-hand main reservoir refilled and a spare engine bay bottle fitted, a right-hand rear suspension return boot replaced, the push rod and pivot ball repacked, a knuckle boot and pin replaced, all the hydraulics bled throughout, the right-hand steering yolk bush replaced, the engine bay and underbody degreased, two new front tyres fitted, and the rear tyres rotated. This Citroën SM is a most handsome example of the strikingly styled Maserati-engined classic French grand tourer, benefitting from significant previous restorative maintenance. The seller states that it is in excellent mechanical condition and presents beautifully, making it an ideal vehicle for the collector, concours d’elegance events, classic car shows and more, while at the same time being very usable for weekend jaunts and long-distance touring alike.
