This W114-generation Mercedes-Benz 280 CE is a well-preserved example of the marque’s elegant pillarless coupe, offered with three owners from new and fresh from a major service. It is powered by a naturally aspirated 2.8-litre ‘M110’ straight-six, producing around 182bhp, driving the rear wheels via a four-speed automatic transmission. The five-digit odometer currently displays 59,115 kilometres but is believed to have rolled over once, making the car’s true total mileage 159,115 Km. This Australian-delivered model was first registered in August 1975, and has been with the seller and third owner for six years. This 280 CE Coupe is finished in the handsome hue of Tunis Beige Metallic over a beige MB-Tex leatherette-trimmed interior, contrasted by a black dashboard and centre console, punctuated by wood veneer inlays and chrome trim accents. It rides on a set of 14-inch steel wheels with chrome and body-coloured hubcaps, shod in Michelin Energy tyres. The factory specification includes an electric sunroof, front and rear fold-down armrests, a locking glove compartment, dual-zone heater and ventilation controls, a Becker Monza cassette stereo, variable speed windscreen wipers, and manually operated windows. The car is accompanied by a first aid box, a jack, tool roll, wheel brace, original spare wheel, the original boot mat, the owner’s manual, a partially stamped maintenance booklet, a Mercedes-Benz chassis and body part list catalogue ‘B’, the Australian delivery certificate, a certificate of approved operations, the original data card, two keys, a Becker radio instruction booklet, a Mercedes-Benz dealer directory, some maintenance invoices, and the original number plates. The seller is not aware of any bodywork damage. The Tunis Beige Metallic paintwork is reported to be in good overall condition given the car’s age and mileage, though the seller notes paint damage on the bonnet and the offside front mudguard, as well as some crazing on the bootlid. There are also blemishes on the front valance, an imperfection on the offside front valance between the headlamp and grille, stone chips on the front of the car, a minor dent and loose trim on the front grille, small dents on the rear trim line, and minor rust spots on the rear valance near the exhaust pipe. Moving inside, the cabin is presented in excellent order. The seller notes that the passenger door pocket has come loose, the dashboard radio speaker cover has been replaced but needs new clips to attach it, there are minor blemishes on the floor mats, and the front seat belts retract slightly slowly. There is also slight discolouration on the driver’s sun visor, wear on the transmission trim, minor corrosion on the driver’s side rear passenger seat belt loop, wear on the driver’s door lock trim, and slight signs of use on the seats, but no wear or discolouration. The seller is not aware of any mechanical faults, and they state that there are no warning lights on the dashboard, though they do note that the radio speaker has an intermittent connection, the passenger door is hard to lock, the rear windscreen and boot lid rubbers are perished, and the interior courtesy light does not illuminate when the doors are opened. The car’s last REGO test was conducted in 2016, and was recorded as a clean pass. This W114-generation Mercedes-Benz 280 CE is a well-preserved and highly original example of the stylish 1970s pillarless coupe, offered with three owners from new and fresh from a major service.
