This R107-generation Mercedes-Benz 350 SL is a handsome example of the refined classic roadster, benefitting from a recent respray. It is powered by a 3.5-litre V8 which is coupled to a three-speed automatic transmission. This right-hand-drive example has been with its current owner for five years and has been used as intended. The odometer displays 177,741 km (110,433 miles) from new. This 350 SL is finished in its original hue of Sand Beige Metallic with a black soft-top roof, over a black MB-Tex leatherette-trimmed interior, offset by a non-standard wood-rimmed steering wheel. It rides on the correct set of 14-inch ‘Baroque’ alloy wheels, shod in mixed tyres. First registered in 1973, this particular SL is an early example of the breed and is believed to be largely original, save the addition of an aftermarket three-spoke steering wheel and a JVC radio CD player. The seats and dashboard have also been replaced with OEM replacement parts during the car’s lifetime. The car is fitted with an aftermarket air conditioning system, which has been recently fitted with new hoses and various parts by an established auto electrician; however, the system currently does not function. The vehicle will be accompanied by a large selection of maintenance invoices, the original jack and hood release tool, and its body-coloured hard top roof. The vendor will also include the original steering wheel if required. There is no impact damage present on the bodywork, though the vendor reports that during the course of 2021, when the car was in the garage for a service, the bonnet was damaged by the garage and was subsequently resprayed. The Sand Beige Metallic paintwork is in generally excellent condition, having been recently repainted. It shows the odd blemish and some cracking around the wheel arches, but elsewhere presents an impressive lustre on all of the panels. Inside, the cabin presents well, with some light wear on the MB-Tex seats and some general signs of use, but with no major wear or discolouration. Other than the inoperative air conditioning system, there are no known electrical or mechanical faults with the car, and there are no warning lights showing on the dashboard. This 350 SL’s latest service was carried out during April 2022 at around 176,000 km by Port Douglas Automotive. The work comprised of an engine oil and filter change, along with the replacement of the manifold to exhaust pipe gaskets and the rocker cover gasket, as well as a brake master cylinder overhaul, an engine tune, and a brake adjustment. Prior to this, the car was serviced in February 2021 which was the rectification of a fuel relay circuit fault, and during October 2021 which was the replacement of the springs and shock absorbers, a change of spark plugs and a fuel hose, and the installation of a new speedo cable and a repair of the dashboard-mounted clock. The vendor also reports that a new battery and two near tyres were fitted in 2021, and the remaining two tyres were replaced in 2022. This Mercedes-Benz 350 SL is a solid example of the marque’s classic roadster, which has been used as intended bit has been well-maintained throughout its life, and is reported to be in excellent condition with no rust present. Supplied with its matching hard top roof it would make a superb choice for sunny weekend jaunts or year-round use, and represents a great entry point into classic Mercedes ownership.
