This Citroën DS23 Safari is a stylish classic family wagon, reported to be one of the last examples to leave the factory in 1974, prior to the model’s withdrawal from sale in 1975. It is powered by the 2.3-litre carburettor-fed inline-four, coupled to a five-speed manual transmission. The DS station wagon was known by different names in individual markets: the ‘Break’ in France, the ‘Safari’ or ‘Estate’ in the UK, the ‘Wagon’ in the US, and Citroën Australia used the terms ‘Safari’ and ‘Station Wagon’. The model saw use as a camera car, notably by the BBC, due its stable hydro-pneumatic self-levelling suspension. The odometer shows 70,633 miles. The DS was both stylistically and technically advanced, boasting a hydro-pneumatic self-levelling suspension system, with hydraulics controlling the brakes, clutch, transmission, and power steering, as well as streamlined bodywork styled by Flaminio Bertoni. An estate car that benefits from a roof rack and two additional seats that fold away into the boot floor, this DS23 Safari is finished in white with chrome bumpers and body trims, over a patterned red fabric interior with red vinyl accents, a black dashboard, white sun visors, and white door card tops. It rides on 15-inch wheels with steel hubcaps, shod with Federal Super Steel 657 tyres. Inside, it has a stylish single-spoke steering wheel, a Jaeger analogue clock and a Clarion auto-reverse cassette stereo. Accompanying the vehicle will be the original owner’s manual, a spare wheel, a toolkit, and a collection of maintenance invoices from 2017 onwards with photographs. Please refer to the photo gallery to assess the exterior and interior condition. The car was repainted and reupholstered in 2017, and the electrics were also overhauled. The indicators were renewed in December 2022. Specific notes from the seller include: there is a paint chip on the front passenger-side wing where it meets the bonnet. In July 2023 at 70,290 miles, Great Lakes Auto Care replaced the starter motor and exhaust manifold gaskets. In June 2023, European Autocare replaced the steering rack and ram, replaced all associated seals and boots, bled the brakes, cleaned the hydraulic filter, adjusted the clutch pivot, and changed the windscreen wiper inserts. In April 2023 at 73,489 miles, Great Lakes Auto Centre cleaned and re-tensioned the crimp terminal to repair inoperative headlights, and also carried out a registration inspection and brake test. In December 2022, Pallas Motors replaced both engine mounts, an engine pipe and flexi pipe, both rear suspension boots, the voltage regulator, the coil and resistor, some corroded connectors, the indicator switch, the alternator and hydraulic pump belts and the exhaust, and also fitted a quick-release battery connector and water overflow pipe. Three months prior in September 2022, Pallas Motors repaired the fuel tank, overhauled the carburettor, and replaced the sender unit and hose, engine oil, oil filter, fuel pump and associated hoses, steering wheel, plugs, points, condenser, and AR spheres. The cambelt was replaced in 2017. This Citroen DS23 Safari is a stylish and sophisticated classic family wagon, reported to be one of the last examples to leave the factory in 1974, prior to the model’s withdrawal from sale in 1975.
