Seller's Notes

This W114-generation Mercedes-Benz 250 C is an elegant 1970s pillarless coupe, offered from long-term ownership and in largely original condition. It is powered by a naturally aspirated 2.8-litre straight-six producing about 128bhp, driven through the rear wheels via a four-speed automatic transmission. The odometer shows 778 kilometres; however, this is the distance covered since the engine rebuild. The true mileage from new cannot be warranted, though the reading on the five-digit odometer prior to the rebuild was 24,460 kms. An original right-hand drive, Australian-delivered ‘code 625’ example, this 250 C has been with the seller for 19 years, but was not driven until 2019 as recommissioning work was being carried out. The car has recently been re-registered for another year (valid until 19 September 2023). This 250 C Coupe is finished in the vibrant hue of Signal Red, over a Parchment ‘MB-Tex’ vinyl-trimmed interior, featuring complementary beige carpets and a contrasting black dashboard with light wood veneer trim inlays. It rides on a replica set of 14-inch alloy wheels, shod with nearly new Dunlop Le Mans tyres, which have covered only 778 kms. The factory specification includes VDO gauges, front and rear centre armrests, manually operated windows, and rear ashtrays. This 250 C Coupe features some upgrades including air conditioning with a rotary-type compressor and fan, a Mercedes-Benz-branded CD stereo, front ‘chrome tennis racket’ stone chip protectors, additional side indicators on the front wings, and a new carpet boot mat. There are also chrome wheel arch trims, which while not factory options, were a popular aftermarket item in period to enhance the look of the car. The car will be supplied with an original owner’s handbook, a copy of an original service book, a Mercedes-Benz plastic wallet, the tool kit, jack, a spare wheel, a custom-made front sun screen, a carpet dashboard protector, and some maintenance invoices. The seller notes that the car was purchased from a wrecker, and had damage to the offside rear quarter panel, which has since been satisfactorily repaired. The Signal Red paintwork is reported to be in good condition given the car’s age, though the seller notes a chip on the offside front scuttle panel. Elsewhere, there is some ‘orange peel’ unevenness beside the rear license plate, the driver’s-side door mirror glass does not appear to fit correctly, and the polished trim items are lightly pitted. All four alloy wheels feature kerb scuffs and other small blemishes. Inside, the cabin is presented in good shape, the seller notes that the front seat squabs, backrests, headrests, and armrest were retrimmed in 2008, and the front carpet mats are reproductions. There is also some discolouration on the front armrest and on the headlining around the front light, a missing switch on the centre console, discolouration on the centre console ashtray, minor blemishes and a crack on the transmission trim, discolouration on the sun visors, blemishes and discolouration on the driver’s door card storage pocket, marks on the passenger door card storage pocket, slightly lifting trim on the passenger-side window winder, and wear on the driver’s door armrest. There is also slight creasing on the seats, with mild discolouration on the driver’s seat. The seller is not aware of any mechanical or electrical faults. This 250 C’s most recent maintenance was carried out in April 2020. Work included the rectification of faults with the vacuum operated central locking system, an air conditioning inspection, the fitment of replacement gear shift bushes, an inspection and adjustment of the brakes, the replacement of the rear axle sway bar links, the repair of a transmission oil leak, and adjustment to the engine idle. A new air conditioning system was installed in July 2019 by Wakeman Auto. Woody’s Engine services carried out a full engine rebuild in April 2019, when the odometer was zeroed. The current reading reflects the use since this rebuild. This W114-generation Mercedes-Benz 250 C is a stylish and refined classic pillarless coupe, offered from long-term ownership and in good condition. Benefitting from previous mechanical restorative maintenance and enhanced by some tasteful cosmetic and electrical upgrades, it would make a smart addition to any collection, and an enjoyable companion for retro daily driving, weekend jaunts, and long-distance cruising alike. The description of this auction lot is, to the best of the seller's knowledge, accurate and not misleading.
