This Porsche 928 is an early-production, manual ‘slick-top’ example of the marque’s landmark front-engined V8 grand tourer, comprehensively restored and uprated with later S2 and S4 components. It is powered by a naturally aspirated 4.9-litre V8 (based on a 1985 4.7-litre S2 unit, enlarged and rebuilt), producing approximately 330bhp, which drives the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transmission with a limited-slip differential. The car was subject to a full ground-up restoration that commenced in June 1998 and was carried out over approximately 13 years, with expenditure stated at over $88,000, excluding around 5,000 hours of labour. The original 4.5-litre engine has been replaced with a rebuilt and enlarged S2-based 4.9-litre unit, managed by a fully programmable Haltech E6K engine management system. The original delivery location for this example is not known, though it was imported to Australia from Hong Kong and has been with the seller for over three years. The odometer indicates 130,352 km, though this is not warranted. Build year: 1978 This early 928 has been extensively restored and upgraded, reportedly using predominantly genuine Porsche or OEM components, incorporating mechanical and cosmetic enhancements inspired by later S and S4 models. It is finished in the refined shade of Artis Silver, over a burgundy leather-trimmed interior. It rides on a set of 17-inch replica chrome ‘Cup’ alloy wheels fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tyres. Equipment includes pop-up headlights, a top-tinted windscreen, a rear screen wiper, electrically adjustable front seats, air conditioning, and electric windows. This example has been enhanced with a black leather-trimmed Momo steering wheel and gear knob, a Blaupunkt Bremen DAB stereo with Bluetooth connectivity, LED lighting in the engine bay and interior, and a retrofitted reversing camera linked to a digital screen in the centre console. The exhaust system now features Porsche S3 stainless steel extractors and a custom stainless steel 2¼-inch system with straight-through mufflers and an integrated ‘Y’ pipe. Cooling upgrades include a new radiator core and tanks with a fabricated engine oil cooler, new radiator shrouds, a twin-speed electric cooling fan replacing the original silicon clutch fan, and new radiator and heater hoses. The car is accompanied by original purchase and ownership documents, a photo history of the restoration, most receipts for parts and works completed, four volumes of Porsche workshop manuals and illustrated parts book, various 928 technical bulletins, Haltech manual, laminated factory wiring diagrams, dyno tuning reports, assorted spare parts including interior materials and exhaust components, and special spanners for adjusting the Bilstein ride height. Two ignition keys are present. The original 8x16-inch ‘Teledial’ alloy wheels are also included in the sale, along with a new spare wheel with a collapsible tyre. Please refer to the photo gallery to assess the exterior and interior condition. Specific notes from the seller include: the vehicle was fully repainted during its restoration. A small crack is present in the paint at the centre of the rear bumper bar. The seller states that the car was taken off the road in June 1998, prior to its long-term ground-up restoration and was re-registered in January 2010. The seller states that the last maintenance was carried out in November 2024. Extensive restoration and mechanical works were undertaken between June 1998 and January 2010, with supporting invoices and documentation on file and visible in the photo gallery. Restoration works included: monocoque body stripped to bare metal, repaired as required, aligned to factory specification, undercoated, and treated with cavity wax. The aluminium doors, front wings and bonnet chemically stripped and refinished. The car repainted in two-pack epoxy Artis Silver metallic. New fibreglass S4-style front and rear sections, rear wing and side mouldings fitted. New door, hatch and glass seals installed, along with a new windscreen, replacement glass where required, new insulation to the floors and rear deck, and new under-bonnet insulation. The suspension was comprehensively rebuilt, with reconditioned Bilstein gas shock absorbers with new shafts, valves and bushes, new front lower ball joints, new dust boots, new wheel bearings, and refinished alloy and steel suspension components. The ride height has been set and aligned to factory specifications. Braking has been overhauled with rebuilt callipers featuring hard-chrome plated pistons, new seals, a new master cylinder, a reconditioned larger S4 brake booster, new hydraulic hoses, new front brake pads, a new handbrake cable, and fresh fluid. The rebuilt 4.9-litre V8 is based on a 4.7-litre S2 engine bored to accept oversized Porsche pistons. Works included crack testing and aligning of con rods, crankshaft linishing, main bearing tunnel checking, re-cut valve seats, refaced valves, pressure-tested heads, balanced reciprocating components, and Nicoseal bore treatment. As well as new bearings, rings, spigot bearing, water pump and cam belt. The fuel injectors were cleaned and tested, and a new fuel pressure regulator and fuel pump were fitted. A Haltech E6K programmable engine management system replaces the original Bosch system, with a custom timing trigger bracket and modified harmonic balancer. The rev limiter is set at 6,100rpm and tuned for 95-octane fuel. The five-speed manual transmission has been rebuilt with new first and reverse gear clusters, reconditioned CV joints and splines, new gear linkage bushes, and a reconditioned tail shaft with new bearings. The clutch system includes new driven plates, new master and slave cylinders, new release bearing and hydraulic hose. The air-conditioning system was overhauled with a new rotary compressor, custom rubber hoses, a new electric push fan, new dryer and pressure switches, and has been flushed, evacuated and regassed. The seller reports it is operational. The interior features 1985 three-way electrically adjustable front seats retrimmed in new leather, colour-matched interior panels and rear seats, and genuine carpets with new backing. This manual, ‘slick-top’ Porsche 928 presents a distinctive example of the marque’s pioneering V8 grand tourer, enhanced through an extensive ground-up restoration and a later S2-based 4.9-litre engine upgrade. With approximately 330bhp, rebuilt mechanical components and S4-inspired enhancements, it offers a compelling blend of early 928 character and improved performance. Accompanied by substantial documentation and restoration history, it would make an engaging addition to a modern classic collection or an enthusiast’s touring stable.
