This W123-generation Mercedes-Benz 280CE is a smart example of the handsome modern classic coupe, which is offered in highly original condition, and has been used and enjoyed as intended. Under the bonnet sits a naturally aspirated 2.7-litre straight-six with Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection, delivering around 136kW to the rear wheels via a four-speed automatic transmission. The odometer shows 292,138 Kms from new. A right-hand drive, Australian-market car, this 280CE has been with the seller for the last two years, and is currently running club plates. This 280 CE is e finished in the elegant hue of Champagne Metallic over a beige leather-trimmed interior, featuring a contrasting black upper dashboard, and handsome wood veneer trim inlays. It rides on a set of 14-inch ‘Baroque’ alloy wheels, shod in Federal Super Steel 657 tyres. The factory specification includes electric windows, dual-zone heater and ventilation controls, and an electric sunroof. A more modern Sony radio/CD player has been fitted in the cabin, though the original Becker Europa cassette player will also be supplied. The original speakers have also been replaced with Sony units. The car will also be accompanied by its original and unused first aid kit, a warning triangle, a tool roll, a spare alloy wheel, a jack, a set of polished wheel trims with body-coloured centres, a stamped service booklet, the owner’s manuals, period NRMA maps of Southeast Australia, one set of keys, and some maintenance and parts invoices. It comes with two sets of keys and one blank set. Given how difficult it is to find original correct keys, the seller states this is a great addition. The Champagne Metallic paintwork is described by the seller as being in fair overall condition, though they note that there is a dent and some chips on the rear edge of the driver’s door, a scuff on the nearside rear wheel arch, and various minor stone chips around the car. There are also scratches on the offside front wing and rear quarter panel, lacquer peel on the rear valance, a small dent on the driver’s-side door mirror cover, and some blistering on the offside rear quarter panel, as well as general small marks and hazing around the vehicle. Inside, the cabin is presented in good order given the car’s age and mileage. The seller notes wear on the driver’s seat bolsters, loose trim on the back of the driver’s seat, cracks in the dashboard, and signs of wear around the ignition barrel. There is also slight damage on the passenger seat belt base trim, cracking on the transmission tunnel wood veneer trim, and a few other blemishes, imperfections and slight signs of wear around the trim. The seller is not aware of any mechanical or electrical faults, though they do note that the electric rear windows can be temperamental. This 280 CE’s most recent maintenance was carried out at 191,800 Kms by Mercedes-Benz specialist Barrie Green, which consisted of an air conditioning re-gas and an engine oil change, as well as the replacement of a spark plug lead, the thermostat, the coolant, and a safety inspection. Technicians at Barrie Green also fitted all new electric window switches, a hazard light switch, new second-hand rear windows and hinges, and replaced the gearbox mount with a new second-hand part. Other notable maintenance includes all of the speakers being replaced with Sony units. 6 Jul 1993, 101,176 Kms at Swatosch Mercedes-Benz Service 14 Dec 1993, 109,872 Kms at Swatosch Mercedes-Benz Service 1 Mar 1994, 112,258 Kms at Swatosch Mercedes-Benz Service 10 Oct 1995, 125,538 Kms at Swatosch Mercedes-Benz Service 31 Jan 1996, 129,446 Kms at Swatosch Mercedes-Benz Service 4 Dec 1996, 142,159 Kms at Swatosch Autohaus Mercedes-Benz Service This W123-generation Mercedes-Benz 280CE is a smart example of the marque’s elegant yet robust modern classic pillarless coupe, offered in highly original condition.
