A well-maintained and subtly enhanced 320iS, which may be the only Australian-registered example. Under the bonnet sits an ‘S14’ 2.0-litre inline-four, delivering 192hp to the rear wheels through a dog-leg five-speed close-ratio ‘Getrag’ gearbox and limited-slip differential. This 320iS is fresh from a service carried out just a kilometre ago by BMW specialist GSpec, which included installing fresh Bilstein shock absorbers and Eibach lowering springs. It was originally registered in Italy in October 1988, and was imported into Australia in September 2021. The 320iS was designed solely for Italy and Portugal in order to fit into the sub 2.0-litre tax band, and is powered by a shorter stroke version of the E30 M3’s S14 engine mated to the M3’s dog-leg Getrag manual gearbox. Only 2,540 two-door examples were produced, and this is believed to be the only one in Australia. It is finished in Diamond Black metallic over an Anthracite cloth-trimmed cabin, and boasts the rare ‘sunroof delete’ option. The car rides on a correct set of 14-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels. Factory-fitted equipment includes electrically operated front windows and mirrors, a Blaupunkt Melbourne SQR 39 radio-cassette player, and a check-control panel. Upgrades include a Mishimoto radiator, electric cooling fan, genuine BMW purple-tag steering rack, a Supersprint exhaust system, Bilstein shock absorbers, Eibach lowering springs, and ADR-approved braided brake lines. In order to be compliant in the Australian market, a child restraint has been installed, as well as an anti-theft kill switch and genuine BMW door intrusion bars. The car is accompanied by a raft of paperwork, records of the Italian ownership, photographs of the original number plates, import approval documentation, invoices, spare wheel, toolkit and jack. There is no known bodywork damage. The paintwork is reported to be in excellent condition, and is well documented in the gallery. Inside, the Anthracite cloth upholstery is in great shape, arguably belying the mileage, with no significant wear. There are no known electrical or mechanical faults. The most recent roadworthiness test took place on 10 September 2021, resulting in a clean first-time pass. The car was last serviced in November 2021 at 191,089 kilometres, when BMW specialist GSpec installed Bilstein shock absorbers and Eibach lowering springs, as well as stainless-steel ADR-approved braided brake lines and a rebuilt propshaft. They also fitted a host of genuine BMW parts, including rear subframe bushes, shock absorber top mounts and seat washers, a Z3 gear shifter, gear shift rod, purple tag steering rack, and S14 cambox gasket, oil breather hose, and rear cover gasket. The 320iS is a remarkably rare version of the hallowed E30-generation 3-Series that was produced solely for the Italian and Portuguese markets, and has often been nicknamed the ‘Italian M3’. Designed with a shorter stroke version of the S14 engine mated to the M3’s Getrag gearbox, this handsome sporting saloon was described as an “ultra-collectible M3-lite” by Road and Track, and this is believed to be the sole example registered in Australia today. Offered for sale in excellent mechanical and cosmetic condition, this E30 would make a natural addition to any collection of BMWs as well as an involving weekend plaything.
