This E34-generation BMW M5 is a solid and usable example of the handsome modern classic executive performance sedan, which is reported to be in highly original condition. Under the bonnet sits the naturally aspirated 3.6-litre ‘S38B36’ straight-six, delivering around 232kW to the rear wheels via a five-speed manual transmission. This example was imported to Australia in 2021 from Brunei, with the seller having imported directly. The odometer currently indicates 49,597 Kms. This M5 is finished in the vibrant shade of Brilliant Red with contrasting gloss black lower trim panels, over a black leather-trimmed interior. The car was resprayed in this original colour in 2021. The interior is black with extended leather throughout. It rides on a set of flawless 17-inch ‘throwing star’ alloy wheels shod in near-new Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tyres. The factory specification includes a three-spoke steering wheel, dual-zone automatic climate control, a heated rear screen, an on-board computer, an electric sunroof, and electrically adjustable front seats with three-position driver memory. This example features a Sony cassette stereo and a Blaupunkt BEQ-S2 ‘Gooseneck’ equaliser. The car comes with the original service booklets, the Sony stereo leaflet, the Concessional RAV Entry Approval document, and all maintenance invoices since importation to Australia. Note there are no documented maintenance records prior to the vehicle’s arrival in Australia. Please refer to the photo gallery to assess the exterior and interior condition. Specific notes from the seller include: a crack on the lower front bumper, a small crack on the left-hand rear quarter panel, a piece of the rear bumper trim is missing, and some overspray. Inside, the seats have sun fading and there is a small 3cm tear on the base of the passenger seat, the leather on the door cards has shrunk around the door handles and has peeled, some of the rubber sills around some of the doors are loose, and the rubber/plastic material under the rear seat is cracked and frayed with age. The seller is not aware of any mechanical faults, though they do note that there is a drain on the battery, so it is currently kept on charge when not in use, and the car idles a little high around 1,000rpm but performs normally during driving. The fuel gauge has an intermittent fault. This M5’s most recent maintenance was carried out in October 2023 at an indicated 49,573 Kms by RX Automotive, which consisted of replacing individual throttle bodies being fitted with new gaskets and some hoses, as well as a new power steering belt, drag link, steering/idler arm, and accelerator bushes, as well as a front wheel alignment. Prior to this, an investigation was carried out in May 2023 at an indicated 49,413 Kms by RX Automotive to find the cause of a fault, which led to the finding of numerous vacuum leaks from the idle valve and throttle body linkage shaft, which were rectified by replacing the wiring to the idle valve. Technicians at RX Automotive carried out a compression test in May 2023, the cam timing was reset, a replacement woodruff key was fitted, a new coolant temperature switch, an idle control valve, some replacement fuel hoses, a new front crankshaft oil seal, and the coolant replaced, plus a new battery was fitted. This E34-generation BMW M5 is a solid example of the refined modern classic executive performance sedan, which is reported to be in highly original condition. Whilst remaining very usable as is, it could benefit from some cosmetic and mechanical maintenance in due course to bring it back to its best. With a bold Brilliant Red finish, timelessly handsome styling, and a potent straight-six engine, it would make a charismatic companion for retro daily driving, weekend fun, and visits to classic car shows alike.
