This HSV Holden Commodore VN SS Group A is a remarkably rare homologation saloon car, which is believed to be one of only two VN Group A ‘Tooheys Special’ ever built. It is powered by a tuned 5.0-litre V8 with twin throttle bodies, producing a dyno proven 324kW at the wheels, which is coupled to a six-speed manual transmission. The car has covered around 4,000 kilometres since being mechanically rebuilt, with the seller noting that the engine was rebuilt with a larger than standard cam shaft and tuned. Therefore, it now produces significantly more power than the standard output of 215kW. It has been with the current and fifth owner for an impressive 21 years, and has covered only 2,850 km during this time, though it is noted to be regularly started and run. Built to homologate the Holden Commodore for Group A touring car racing, the Holden HSV Commodore VN SS Group A featured an extensively modified version of Holden’s 5.0-litre V8 engine to produce 215 kW and 411Nm of torque, which it sent to the rear wheels through a six-speed ZF S6-40 manual transmission, as used in the Chevrolet Corvette ZR-1. Upgrades were also made to the suspension, tyres, and brakes. Although a total production of 500 cars was originally planned for racing homologation reasons, only 302 examples were ultimately produced, in non-sequential order. This VN SS Commodore is finished in black with a dark grey cloth-trimmed interior. It rides on 17-inch Group A alloy wheels, fitted with Kuhmo Ecsta SPT tyres. Features include a four-spoke steering wheel, cushioned bucket seats, electric windows, electrically operated door mirrors, air conditioning, a radio cassette player, a lockable glove box, a heated rear screen, a trip computer, and a dimmable instrument cluster. The car comes with its original Group A build book, a dynamometer readout, an HSV folder, and a small selection of maintenance-related paperwork. Please refer to the photo gallery to assess the exterior and interior condition. The seller notes that there is a slight leak in power steering rack due to lack of use, and that some of the fuel lines are starting to become hard due to the age of vehicle. Specific notes from the seller include: Inside there is fading on the orange part of the seat belt clips and on the orange stickers on the door lock buttons. The seller notes that the engine oil and filters have been changed annually, with the most recent being in December 2023 at 38,550 kilometres at which point the O-rings in the main fuel line into the throttle bodies were also replaced. Prior to this, the engine oil and filters were replaced in December 2022 at 38,495 kilometres, and in December 2021 at 38,475 kilometres. The head gaskets, ARP bolts, and all of the fluids were replaced in 2009. This black Holden HSV Commodore VN SS Group A ‘Tooheys Special’ is a particularly rare and intriguing homologation special, which will make an impression whether driven to classic gatherings or enjoyed out on the open road. This example has been used sparingly by its long-term owner, but has been maintained regardless of mileage. While the new owner may wish to attend to a few issues relating to lack of use, it will make a wonderful addition to any collection of rare and interesting homologation specials, or a fine weekend car which will turn heads wherever it is driven.
