Seller's Notes

A highly collectible and evocative homologation special, this VN-generation Holden HSV Commodore SS Group A is number 37 of just 302 cars built to meet Group A touring car regulations. It is powered by a naturally aspirated 5.0-litre V8, driving the rear wheels via a six-speed manual transmission. This example has remained in single-family ownership from new, first registered in the Northern Territory in November 1990 and moved to Queensland in 2021. The odometer shows 166,820 Kms from new. Build year: 1990 Built to homologate the Holden Commodore for Group A touring car racing, the Holden HSV Commodore VN SS Group A featured an extensively modified version of Holden’s 5.0-litre V8 engine to produce 215 kW and 411Nm of torque, which it sent to the rear wheels through a six-speed ZF S6-40 manual transmission, as used in the Chevrolet Corvette ZR-1. Upgrades were also made to the suspension, tyres, and brakes. Although a total production of 500 cars was originally planned for racing homologation reasons, only 302 examples were ultimately produced, in non-sequential order. This VN-era Commodore SS Group A is finished in the model-specific shade of Durif Red, over a grey velour cloth-trimmed interior, featuring patterned door card and seat inserts with red accents. It rides on a set of 17-inch ‘Group A’ alloy wheels fitted with Bridgestone Potenza tyres. Equipment includes unique aerodynamic bodywork, upgraded suspension, a Momo steering wheel, electrically operated windows and door mirrors, automatic climate control, a cassette stereo, a top-tinted windscreen, and a fold-down rear armrest. The car is accompanied by the original Group A owner’s manual and radio book with Kerry Holden wallet, a couple of period photos of the car, and a ‘Group A Racing’ cap, as well as two keys, a jack, and a spare wheel. A new-old-stock 3-metre roll of matching centre seat cloth and additional grey trim material for the door cards will also be included in the sale. Please refer to the photo gallery to assess the exterior and interior condition. Specific notes from the seller include: some wear to the door cards and seat trim commensurate with age, the exterior has received an ‘outside doors closed’ repaint due to scuffs, minor dents, and bumper wear; the bumper bars were also subject to minor fibreglass repairs. The seller notes that the air conditioning requires re-gassing, and there is a known issue with the alarm remote system. The car’s last roadworthiness test was conducted in July 2024, which is understood to have resulted in a clean pass. This Commodore’s most recent maintenance was carried out in June 2024 at around 166,000 Kms by the owner, which included, the replacement of both fuel pumps, a new fuel filter, an injector clean, a new air filter, an engine oil and filter change, brake fluid flush, radiator fluid change, the fitment of new tyres, a new front windscreen installed, and a new battery. Earlier service records are documented in the log book, although the seller notes specific past services prior to 2024 are not detailed. This car is presented a second time at auction after a previous sale was agreed but subsequently failed to complete - the car was not viewed and the sale fell through purely due to a change in the buyer's circumstances. This VN-generation Holden HSV Commodore SS Group A is a rare and revered Australian muscle car, built to satisfy touring car homologation rules and now cherished as a piece of local motorsport heritage. Number 37 of just 302 examples produced, and presented in its correct hue of Durif Red with a well-preserved and original drivetrain, this car remained in single-family ownership and benefits from a recent mechanical refresh. An appealing opportunity for collectors and Holden enthusiasts alike, this Group A would make an exciting addition to any garage, and a standout at marque events or classic car gatherings.
