This Mercedes-Benz SL500 is an original and unmolested example of the powerful and sophisticated modern classic roadster. It is powered by a 240kW / 322bhp 5.0-litre V8 engine, driving the rear wheels via a four-speed automatic gearbox. Exceptionally well maintained and original Australian delivered car with great provenance and extensive service history. The R129 SL was a major step on from the R107, introducing elements such as the multi-link rear axle for enhanced ride comfort and stability, and with anti-dive geometry and a stabiliser bar. It also introduced the hydraulic convertible soft top, and its cabin featured electric windows, mirrors, and seats. This example is finished in the elegant hue of Smoke Silver, and rides on the correct 16-inch eight-hole alloy wheels, which are wrapped in Pirelli Cinturato P7 tyres. There is a black fabric soft top, and a colour-coded hard top roof included as well. Inside, there is black leather upholstery for the seats, and the car was specified without rear seats, meaning there is just a convenient carpeted luggage shelf. The interior is accented by dark wood veneers. Its equipment includes electrically adjustable front seats with memory, climate control, cruise control, heated rear screen, and the optional Adaptive Damping System suspension. Accompanying the car are all the original books and user guides, factory data card, plus the stamped warranty and maintenance booklet, keys, and various receipts. Even the original warning triangle and spare wheel and jack are included. There is no known prior damage; all of the body panels are believed to be completely original. Its Smoke Silver paintwork is reported to be in excellent condition, and it is well documented in the photo gallery. There is a small stone chip in the bonnet, but evidently this is a well cared-for example of the stylish roadster. Inside, the black leather upholstery still presents very well, with some light surface creases, but no significant wear or discolouration. There are some superficial marks in the wood inlays, and slight ‘patina’ on touch points such as the steering wheel. There are no known electrical or mechanical faults. The last scheduled maintenance was in July 2021 at 99,997 km, with an annual service carried out by Mercedes-Benz Ballarat in Victoria. During a service in August 2019 at 99,190 km, the brake fluid was renewed. Prior to this, it was serviced by Pro Star Motors in September 2016 at 97,718 km, and by Mercedes-Benz Toorak in April 2015 at 95,308 km - and the latter included a fresh set of spark plugs. It is presented in very good cosmetic order, supported by a strong maintenance history from new. A great choice for top-down cruising in warmer months or for longer distance tours, this impressive example will also appeal to discerning Mercedes collectors.
