An excellent example of BMW’s rare 540i Limited Edition, boasting a generous specification and presented in very smart overall condition. Under the bonnet is the ‘M60B60’ 4.0-litre naturally aspirated V8, delivering 282bhp and 295lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual transmission. This 540i Limited Edition is number 20 of just 70 examples built, and benefits from a comprehensive service history which includes a full recent refresh of its self-levelling suspension system. This 540i is finished in Petrol Mica over a BMW Individual black and grey two-tone leather interior featuring BMW Individual fine wood trim as well as a leather-trimmed steering wheel and gear knob with ‘M’ tricolour stitching. It rides on its original 17-inch ‘Throwing Star’ M-System II alloy wheels. The 540i Limited Edition specification includes the interior from the contemporary M5, the ‘Throwing Star’ alloy wheels, Electronic Damper Control suspension with a self-levelling rear, Servotronic power steering, and a deeper front bumper with front fog lights. Additionally, this example is fitted with a trip computer, cruise control, automatic stability control, four electric windows, an electric sunroof, dual-zone air conditioning, and electrically adjustable front seats with three-position driver’s memory. An aftermarket rear silencer and JVC Bluetooth stereo have been fitted, though the original BMW radio will also be supplied with the car. Also included in the sale are the original owner’s handbook and service book, various maintenance invoices, the original boot-mounted toolkit and warning triangle, a spare wheel with an extra unpainted ‘Throwing Star’ cover, and an unfitted boot lid-mounted reflector panel. There is no known bodywork damage. The Petrol Mica paintwork presents very well, and the bonnet and front wheel arches have previously been resprayed to correct lacquer peel. There are a few small imperfections around the vehicle commensurate with its age and mileage. The alloy wheels are in fair condition, and the owner reports that they would benefit from being refurbished. One of the ‘Throwing Star’ covers is cracked, and a spare unpainted cover is also included in the sale. Moving inside, the two-tone leather-trimmed cabin is in good condition, with some signs of use including frayed stitching on the steering wheel and a little creasing on the seats. There are no known mechanical or electrical faults, and no warning lights on the dashboard. The car’s most recent roadworthiness test was the Victorian RWC, completed in February 2019 with no recorded warnings or advisories. This 540i’s most recent scheduled maintenance was carried out in September 2020 at 185,977 kilometres, when Future Tech Car Service performed a major service totalling nearly $7,000. The work included re-gassing the air conditioning system, refurbishing the front suspension struts and fitting new bump stops, dust boots, coil spring insulator pads, and upper bearing mounts. They also replaced the front wheel bearings, engine cover valve gaskets, oil filter housing, hydraulic pressure switch, power steering pump feed and return hoses, and rear suspension self-levelling valve inlet and return hoses. Finally, the gearbox and rear differential oils were renewed.
