HSV's VS Senator was designed as a luxury-focused performance cruiser of the VS Commodore generation. Buyers could choose the standard 185i 5.0-litre pushrod V8 engine generating 185 kW (248 hp) at 4800 rpm, or the optional 215i 5.7-litre "stroker" V8 engine pushing out 215 kW (288 hp) at 4800 rpm Unlike the firmer, track-oriented GTS or ClubSport, the Senator utilised a softer touring suspension setup designed to absorb long-distance road imperfections.
