Based on the early 3.0-litre E36 M3, the M3 R retained the naturally aspirated inline-six but featured extensive weight-saving measures including lighter panels, reduced sound deadening, thinner glass, and upgraded brakes and suspension, giving it a far more focused driving character than the standard M3.
