1st Gen (1967 to 1969)

Introduced for the 1967 model year, the first-generation Chevrolet Camaro was General Motors’ direct response to the Ford Mustang and quickly became one of the defining American muscle cars of the late 1960s. Offered as a rear-wheel-drive hardtop or convertible, the Camaro range spanned everything from inline-six cruisers to high-performance V8-powered monsters, with buyers able to tailor cars through factory option packages. The three most significant packages were the RS (Rally Sport) appearance package with hidden headlights, the SS (Super Sport) performance package featuring 350 or 396 cu.in. V8s and upgraded suspension, and the legendary Z/28, originally an unadvertised homologation model powered by a high-revving 302 cu.in. V8 developed for Trans-Am racing. Other highly desirable variants include the COPO Camaros, Yenko conversions, and the ultra-rare 1969 ZL-1, one of the most valuable muscle cars ever built. Approximately 699,000 first-generation Camaros were produced between 1967 and 1969. In the Australian market, first-gen Camaros were never officially sold new and exist solely as imports, with values driven by engine specification, RS/SS/Z/28 packages, originality, and build year (1969 premium), while modified examples remain common thanks to the platform’s enduring popularity.
