Introduced in 1992, the Mazda RX-7 Series 6 marked the launch of the third-generation FD and set a new benchmark for Japanese performance cars, combining lightweight construction with advanced turbocharging and sharp, aerodynamic styling. Series 6 RX-7s were powered by the twin-turbocharged 1.3-litre 13B rotary, producing around 255 hp, paired primarily with a 5-speed manual transmission, with an automatic offered in far smaller numbers. Compared to later updates, Series 6 cars are known for their raw driving character, simpler electronics, and early twin-turbo setup, making them particularly appealing to purists. Estimated production for Series 6 models is approximately 25,000–28,000 units worldwide, forming the largest share of FD RX-7 output.
