R231 (2013 to 2021)

The Mercedes-Benz SL R231 was introduced for the 2013 model year and replaced the R230 as a more lightweight, performance-focused evolution of the SL-Class roadster. Built almost entirely from aluminium, the R231 was approximately 140 kg lighter than its predecessor, improving handling, efficiency, and overall driving dynamics while retaining the SL’s luxury grand-touring character. Engine options ranged from turbocharged V6 and V8 units to the flagship V12, with variants including the SL400, SL450, SL500, SL550, SL63 AMG, and SL65 AMG. Produced until 2020, the R231 was ultimately replaced by the R232 SL-Class, and in the Australian market, the R231 is appreciated for its balance of modern performance, reduced weight, and refinement, with AMG variants remaining the most sought after.
