S4 (1986 to 1993)

The 1987 arrival of the Porsche 928 S4 marked a major departure for the model, introducing a fresh, smoothed-out look that finally retired the original 1970s styling. Heart of the beast was a sophisticated 32-valve 5.0-litre V8, and while European versions pushed out 235 kW, Australian-delivered cars were factory-tuned to roughly 221 kW to handle our local lower-octane fuel. In our market, the S4 was an incredibly exclusive grand tourer, with fewer than 300 of these 32-valve units officially sold here, often carrying price tags that made them even more expensive than a contemporary 911. The current buyer pool is largely made up of enthusiasts who see the S4 as the perfect middle ground between performance and long-distance comfort, though its high desirability is strictly tied to a bulletproof service history.
