22B STi (1998 to 1999)

Often regarded as the holy grail of Subaru Imprezas, the Subaru Impreza 22B STi was a limited-production homologation special created in 1998 to celebrate Subaru’s 40th anniversary and three consecutive World Rally Championship Constructors’ titles. Built as a widebody coupe only, the 22B featured a heavily uprated drivetrain, motorsport-derived suspension, and a bespoke turbocharged 2.2-litre flat-four developed for stronger torque and durability than the standard 2.0-litre units, all wrapped in an aggressively flared body inspired directly by Subaru’s WRC cars. Total production is believed to be 424 cars, comprising 399 numbered Japanese-market examples (with the number 13 intentionally skipped) and 25 non-numbered cars allocated to markets including Australia and the UK. In the Australian market, genuine 22B STi examples are exceptionally rare and tightly held, with values driven by authenticity, originality, provenance, and condition, firmly positioning the 22B as one of the most significant and collectible Japanese performance cars ever produced.
