Introduced in 2020, the Toyota GR Yaris is a purpose-built two-door performance hatchback developed by Toyota Gazoo Racing to satisfy World Rally Championship homologation requirements, sharing little beyond its name with the standard Yaris. Built on a bespoke platform combining different Toyota architectures, the GR Yaris features all-wheel drive, a widened body, lightweight construction, and the turbocharged 1.6-litre three-cylinder (GXPA16)—the most powerful production three-cylinder engine of its time—paired to a manual or automatic transmission. A Japan-only GR Yaris RS variant was also offered with front-wheel drive and a naturally aspirated 1.5-litre engine, though this is generally excluded from performance-focused markets. Global production is estimated at approximately 40,000 units, reflecting its limited-run, homologation-focused intent. In the Australian market, the GR Yaris was officially sold and quickly achieved cult status, with values driven by manual transmission preference, Rallye and special editions, originality, and low kilometres, as collectors increasingly view it as a modern rally icon rather than a conventional hot hatch.
