Seller's Notes

Noted to be an original and rare Australian-delivered example, first registered in New South Wales. This Mercedes-Benz 280 SL 'California Coupe' is a rare variant of the iconic W113 Pagoda series, which came without the usual folding soft-top roof. It is powered by a naturally aspirated 2.8-litre inline-six, delivering around 125kW to the rear wheels via a four-speed automatic transmission. The 280 SL California Coupe is significantly more rare than the standard roadster, with only 831 units thought to have been produced for the 1970 model year. The five-digit odometer shows 19,444 miles, but this is not the accurate total, with the seller indicating that the true total is 119,444 miles, though this is not warranted. Build year: 1970 Unlike the standard roadster, the California Coupe replaces the soft-top storage compartment with a rear bench seat, allowing for two additional passengers. This example is finished in dark blue, with a colour-matched ‘Pagoda’ removable hardtop roof, and a set of polished 14-inch wheels with body-coloured hubcaps and 185HR14 Michelin MXV 20mm Whitewall tyres. The interior features grey leather upholstery, complemented by blue carpets, a blue dashboard panel and elegant wood trim. Equipment includes a two-spoke steering wheel, VDO gauges, an analogue clock, heater and ventilation controls, a locking glove compartment, and a Becker Europa II radio. The car will be supplied with its owner’s manual, a replacement service book (issued in September 1992 at 98,124 miles), the hardtop storage trolley, and a toolkit. Please refer to the photo gallery to assess the exterior and interior condition. Specific notes from the seller include: there is a dent repair on the boot lid; some very minor paint damage where the hardtop touches at the rear edge; the interior has been fully reupholstered. The seller notes that the car’s most recent maintenance was completed in February 2024, where Ringler Services replaced the coolant expansion tank, thermostat and coolant, cleaned corrosion from the thermostat housing, and checked the operation of the coolant temperature gauge. The seller states that a rebuilt steering box was fitted in November 2023. The seller states that in September 2023, the engine oil, oil filter, fuel filter and differential oil were replaced, the throttle linkage was lubricated, new horns were installed, and the steering box was adjusted. The seller reports that the wiring harness, heater control levers/globe holders, defroster nozzles, exhaust system, windscreen, leather trim and carpets have been replaced during their ownership. 23/12/1986 - 75,016 miles - McIntosh of Mosman (evidenced) 21/02/1989 - 77,308 miles - McIntosh of Mosman (evidenced) 20/06/1990 - 89,999 miles - McIntosh of Mosman (evidenced) This 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280 SL 'California Coupe' is a rare and unique variant of the iconic W113 Pagoda series, which came without the usual folding soft-top roof. Reportedly benefiting from some extensive restorative maintenance, it would make a charming addition to any collection of classic European cars, as well as a joyous companion for sunny weekend drives or longer-distance tours.
