Type 105 (1962 to 1978)

Introduced in 1962 as a technically advanced successor to the Giulietta, the Alfa Romeo Giulia (Type 105) redefined the sports sedan and coupé segments during its production run until 1978. Built on a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive platform, the Type 105 was offered in three primary body styles: the four-door Berlina (sedan), the Spider (convertible), and the iconic Giorgetto Giugiaro-designed Coupé (marketed as the Sprint GT, GTV, and GT Junior). The range utilized the all-aluminium Alfa Romeo Twin Cam inline-four engine, varying in displacement from 1.3L to 2.0L, with the 1.6L "Super" variant producing approximately 71kW (97hp) while the final 2.0L GTV achieved 112kW (150hp). All models featured a floor-shifted five-speed manual transmission (a rarity for the era) and four-wheel disc brakes. High-performance and competition-focused variants included the legendary Giulia Sprint GTA with lightweight aluminium bodywork and twin-spark ignition. The Australian market became a significant stronghold for the 105 series, with local deliveries commencing in 1964 via distributors like Alec Mildren; it remains one of the most collectible vintage Alfas in Australia due to its extensive local motorsport pedigree at Bathurst and in touring car racing. The Type 105 Berlina was ultimately replaced by the Alfa Romeo Alfetta and Giulietta (Type 116), while the coupés were succeeded by the Alfetta GT and GTV.
