MARKET ANALYSIS
E21 (1976 to 1983)

Introduced in 1975 (as a 1976 model in many markets), the BMW E21 was the first-generation BMW 3 Series and laid the foundation for what would become one of the most successful premium car lines in history. Offered exclusively as a two-door sedan, with coachbuilt Baur cabriolet conversions available, the E21 featured rear-wheel drive and a range of inline-four and inline-six engines, establishing BMW’s reputation for compact, driver-focused performance. The model lineup included variants such as the 315, 316, 318, 318i, 320, 320i, 320/6, and the range-topping 323i, while notable performance versions were produced by Alpina, including the B6 and C1. Total E21 production exceeded approximately 1.36 million units before the model was replaced in 1983 by the E30. In the Australian market, the E21 was officially sold and is increasingly appreciated as a classic entry point into BMW ownership, with values driven by six-cylinder cars, manual gearboxes, originality, and rust-free condition, particularly as early 3 Series examples become harder to find.
