III (1995 to 1996)

Introduced in 1995, the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution III was the final and most developed version of the early CE9A-based Evolutions, and the last before Mitsubishi’s major platform leap with the Evo IV. Sold exclusively in the Japanese market, the Evo III featured more aggressive bodywork, a prominent rear wing, and continued use of the turbocharged 2.0-litre 4G63 inline-four, now tuned to around 270 bhp, paired with a permanent all-wheel-drive system. As with earlier models, buyers could choose between the stripped-back RS (Rally Sport) or the better-equipped GSR (Gran Sport Racing). Total production is estimated at approximately 7,000 units worldwide, making it one of the rarer core Evolution models. In the Australian market, the Evo III was never officially sold and exists solely as a grey import, with values driven by RS vs GSR specification, originality, condition, and its status as the last of the lightweight, pre-IV rally-era Evos, increasingly appealing to collectors seeking the purest early Evolution experience.
