MARKET ANALYSIS
IV (1996 to 1998)

Introduced in 1996, the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IV marked a major leap forward for the Evo line, debuting the wider CP9A platform and a more aggressive, purpose-built stance aimed squarely at rally performance. Offered as a performance-focused all-wheel-drive sedan, buyers could choose between the stripped-back RS (Rally Sport) and the more road-oriented GSR (Gran Sport Racing), both powered by the turbocharged 2.0-litre inline-four rated at the era-capped 276 hp. Visual changes—including the distinctive front fog lights (optional on RS) and redesigned taillights—signalled the Evo’s move into a bolder design phase, while chassis and drivetrain upgrades sharpened handling and traction. Production was limited to approximately 9,000 units worldwide, the majority being GSRs, before the model was replaced in 1998 by the Evolution V. In the Australian market, the Evo IV was never officially sold and exists largely as a grey import, with values driven by RS vs GSR specification, originality, condition, and import provenance, as collectors increasingly seek early rally-era Evolutions with clear WRC lineage.
