E30 (1986 to 1991)

Introduced in 1986 as a 1987 model, the BMW E30 M3 was created as a homologation special for touring car racing and remains the most revered M3 ever built, setting a benchmark no later generation has truly surpassed. Powered by BMW’s high-revving S14 inline-four, the E30 M3 featured a significantly reworked drivetrain, wider track, and extensive body changes, with only a handful of panels shared with the standard E30, giving it a purpose-built motorsport identity rather than a tuned road car feel.
