Produced from 1992 to 2002, the third-generation Mazda RX-7 (FD chassis) is widely regarded as the high point of Mazda’s rotary-powered sports car legacy, combining lightweight construction with advanced turbocharging and striking design. Unlike earlier RX-7s, the FD was offered exclusively with a twin-turbocharged 1.3-litre 13B rotary, delivering around 255 hp in most markets, paired primarily to a 5-speed manual transmission, with a rare automatic also available. Despite being wider and more sophisticated than the FC, the FD was lighter, sharper, and significantly more performance-focused. Global production totalled approximately 68,000 units, with the model officially sold in Australia, where it quickly developed a strong enthusiast following. Notable variants include the US-market R1 and R2, Japanese Type R Bathurst, and the highly collectible Spirit R, built for the final production year.
