About the Mercedes-Benz G-Class W463 Pre-Facelift

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class W463 (Pre-Facelift) was introduced in 1990 and marked the G-Wagen’s transformation from a utilitarian off-roader into a true luxury SUV, while retaining its core ladder-frame chassis, solid axles, and triple locking differentials. Compared to the earlier W460, the W463 brought a permanent all-wheel-drive system, improved safety, and a vastly upgraded interior with leather trim, wood accents, and modern conveniences, helping elevate the G-Class into a premium segment. Early W463 models included variants such as the 230GE, 300GE, 250GD, 300GD, and flagship 500GE, later expanding into AMG offerings like the G36 AMG and G55 AMG, while a parallel W461 fleet version continued for military and commercial use. In the Australian market, pre-facelift W463s are prized for offering classic G-Wagen proportions with old-school mechanicals, and remain increasingly collectible due to their blend of analogue durability and early luxury, sitting just before the heavily modernised post-2019 facelift era.
