About the BMW 5 Series

The BMW 5 Series has maintained its status as the premier executive sedan across eight generations, evolving from the mechanical purity of the 1970s to the high-tech digital era of today. It all started with the E12 (1972–1981), which set the tone with its driver-centric cockpit and classic shark-nose aesthetic, followed by the E28 (1981–1988), a model that refined the formula and remains a darling for vintage enthusiasts due to its lightweight feel and iconic styling. The E34 (1988–1996) marked a shift toward greater safety and luxury, introducing V8 power to the non-M range, while the E39 (1995–2004) is frequently hailed as the pinnacle of the series for its legendary steering feedback and timeless proportions. Innovation took a bold turn with the E60 (2003–2010), featuring polarizing design and advanced electronics, before the F10 (2010–2017) returned to a more conservative, sophisticated look with a focus on interior comfort. The G30 (2017–2023) brought significant weight savings and modern turbocharged efficiency, leading into the current G60 (2023–present), which bridges the gap to the future with its bold tech and electric options. In the Australian market, desirability is exceptionally high for well-preserved classics like the E30 and E39, as well as high-spec modern variants like the 540i and M550i, attracting a diverse buyer pool that ranges from serious collectors to luxury-minded professionals. Market values for the older generations have seen a noticeable climb as original examples become scarce, while modern models hold their worth through a reputation for prestige and cutting-edge safety. Maintaining these vehicles requires a commitment to proactive care, particularly for the cooling systems and plastic components in the middle-aged models and the complex software in the newer iterations. Ultimately, the 5 Series remains a respected cornerstone of the automotive world, offering a unique blend of heritage and performance that continues to resonate with drivers across the country.
