About the Mercedes-Benz G-Class W461

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class W461 is the utility and military-focused evolution of the original G-Wagen, introduced in 1992 as the successor to the W460 and remaining in limited production to this day for government, military, emergency services, and commercial use. Built around the same ladder-frame chassis, solid axles, and full-time four-wheel drive with locking differentials, the W461 prioritised durability and function over luxury, featuring spartan interiors, vinyl floors, manual windows, steel wheels, and minimal trim. Engine options have traditionally included a range of naturally aspirated petrol and diesel units, designed for reliability rather than performance. In the Australian market, W461 models are rare and highly sought after by enthusiasts wanting a true no-frills G-Wagen, valued for their mechanical simplicity, off-road capability, and close ties to the G-Class’s military roots, making them increasingly collectible as utilitarian 4x4s disappear from the modern market.
