About the Mercedes-Benz S-Class W140

The Mercedes-Benz W140 S-Class was introduced in 1992 and represented a bold leap in size, technology, and engineering ambition for Mercedes’ flagship luxury sedan. Offered as both a four-door sedan (W140) and a two-door coupe (C140), the W140 introduced features such as double-pane windows, soft-close doors and boot, adaptive suspension, and advanced climate control, setting new standards for refinement and isolation. Engine options ranged from inline-six and V8 units to the legendary V12-powered S600, reinforcing the model’s top-tier status. Produced until 1999 before being replaced by the W220, Mercedes-Benz built approximately 432,000 examples of the W140. In the Australian market, the W140 has undergone a resurgence in appreciation, now viewed as a modern classic admired for its over-engineering, commanding presence, and the long-term collectability of V12 and coupe variants.
