W460 (1980 to 1991)

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class (Geländewagen) was first introduced in 1980 and quickly established itself as one of the most durable and recognisable luxury off-road vehicles ever built. Developed originally as a military and utility vehicle, the early W460 G-Class combined a ladder-frame chassis, solid axles, and full-time four-wheel drive with a wide range of petrol and diesel engines, including models such as the 200GE, 230G/GE, 280GE, and diesel variants 240GD, 250GD, and 300GD, offered in short-wheelbase, long-wheelbase, and cabriolet body styles. Production of the W460 continued until 1991, overlapping with the launch of the more luxurious W463 in 1990.
