E36 (1992 to 1999)

Introduced in 1992, the BMW E36 M3 marked a major evolution of the M3 concept, shifting from the homologation-focused E30 to a more refined yet still highly capable performance car suited to both road and track use. Built on the E36 3 Series platform, the M3 was offered in Coupe, Sedan, and Convertible body styles with manual and automatic transmissions, broadening its appeal significantly. Early cars were powered by a 3.0-litre inline-six, while later models adopted a larger 3.2-litre version, delivering stronger performance and improved drivability, particularly in European and Australian-delivered cars, which received the higher-output engines. A number of special variants were produced, including the M3 Evolution, M3 Lightweight, GT, GT Individual, and Imola Individual, adding depth and collectability to the range. Total global production is approximately 71,242 cars, making the E36 the highest-volume M3 generation. In the Australian market, the E36 M3 was officially sold and has become increasingly appreciated for its balance of performance, usability, and classic BMW M character, with values driven by engine specification, body style (Coupe and Sedan preference), transmission, originality, and condition, as clean, well-kept examples continue to thin out.
