About the Mercedes-Benz SL

The Mercedes-Benz SL-Class is one of the most influential and longest-running luxury grand tourer nameplates in automotive history, first introduced in 1954 and remaining in production for over 70 years. Originally conceived as a two-door sports and grand touring car, the SL evolved from early coupes into predominantly convertible roadsters, featuring detachable hardtops, retractable roofs, and most recently soft-top performance layouts. Across its lifespan, the SL has spanned eight generations — W198 (1954–1963), W121 (1955–1963), W113 (1963–1971), R107/C107 (1971–1989), R129 (1989–2002), R230 (2002–2012), R231 (2012–2021), and the current R232 (2022– ) — producing some of Mercedes-Benz’s most celebrated cars, including the 300SL Gullwing, 280SL Pagoda, and SL65 AMG Black Series. In the Australian market, the SL-Class has long been a symbol of prestige and performance, with classic generations increasingly sought after by collectors, while modern AMG-built models continue to anchor the SL as a benchmark luxury performance roadster.
